In this position, I had the opportunity to serve as the head intern, conduct market research, assist and create promotional plans, and execute game day promotional activities. This role built off of my previous rule with Maryland Baseball, but my role was expanded. Along with being able to create promotions such as the #LOCKedInStudent Away Trip, I was allowed to sit in on meetings with the full-time staff to get an even better understanding how a successful marketing department functions. During this time, I was able to create and execute promotions, call games, create social media posts, and conduct market research for the program. One of the promotions I created was called “Wings for Dings” which helped us activate one of our corporate sonships with Wings Over. For this promotion, every time Maryland hit a home run, three fans in attendance would receive a free meal at Wings Over. As a sophomore, I worked 6-8 games a month and learned about what makes a successful marketing department by doing so. During each game, I would be responsible for running a specific promotion and ensuring all those involved with it had a positive experience. This meant I was constantly interacting with the fans as well as communicating any major concerns back to my supervisor. In semester’s past, this has been a responsibility of our Program Assistants, but because of the increased importance of social media, it was determined a the role needed to be created to run all marketing operations. Since I took over the program’s Instagram account, there has been a 56% increase in the number of followers. This was achieved by significantly increasing the amount of posts that included participants, as well as featuring them on our story. By tagging them in the posts, it increases the amount of interactions we will have with them, and they are also likely to repost it on their story which further increases our reach. The other social media platform we use is Snapchat. For every “Champ Night” or special event, we would purchase a geofilter the participants to use. The goal of the foundation is to prevent anymore suicides from happening by providing more resources for people to have when they are in a crisis. The creation of the app allows another resources for students to use, as there’s now a text function where they can text a counselor if they do not feel comfortable talking to them on the phone. The student will still have the ability to call their counselor if they feel it is urgent or if they feel the chat isn’t helping.
